Frederick Herzberg considered that there are certain factors at the workplace which motivate workers, hence, lead to job satisfaction. These factors can be largely categorised into two main groups namely motivators and hygiene factors. The motivators include challenging work, recognition at the workplace, duties and responsibilities that give positive satisfaction to the workers (Madsen 2009; Latham 2012). Motivators arise from intrinsic conditions of the job itself. On the other hand, hygiene factors include factors such as job security, good salary and fringe benefits that do not give positive satisfaction but their absence results to dissatisfaction. They arise from extrinsic conditions of the job. Based on Herzberg’ Two-Factor Theory, I would be able to improve the quality of my performance by identifying intrinsic and extrinsic factors in education such as recognition as the best student in the faculty that would lead to positive satisfaction.
