The San Francisco Bay is usually frequented by California sea lions during the months of winter, when herring spawn in the bay. According to the Marine Mammal Center biologists, sea lions haul out at the dock of a Pier 39 since there is an availability of food in the ocean and the bay (“Sea Lion Q & A” par. 1). Sea Lions regularly fall prey to orcas and white sharks, which typically do not feed in the Gulf despite the plenty space available. Moreover, docks are comfortable at the time of a storm and easier to haul compared to a rocky beach. Sea lions find it simpler to maintain the same position while tides move in and out, instead of scrambling the rocks up and down. Current paper will discuss the relationship between humans and sea lions and the habitat of sea lions to show that sea lions are useful though hostile to people.
Relations between Sea Lions and Humans
Active interactions with humans and sea lions have been considerably witnessed (“Sea Lions and Humans” par. 2). Most of the time people visit a zoo to see these animals. Besides, sea lions are known to have high intelligence quotient, and they can be trained to perform various tricks for the crowd. The creatures are also known to be calm. Thus, they cannot harm the visiting people because they work side by side in water (“Sea Lions and Humans” par. 2). Nevertheless, not every training with sea lions is for entertainment. For instance, the United States government used sea lions to aid their scuba diving teams. The sea lions detain scuba divers found in prohibited areas until authorities get to the scene (“Sea Lions and Humans” par. 3). For another thing, some legends globally show positive interactions between the sea lions and people. For instance, sea lions are actively involved in the culture of Peru and linked to its history. The Peru residents are known to worship a sea lion in history. Besides, Peruvians represent the sea lion in the various artworks (“Sea Lions and Humans” par. 3).
On the other hand, not every interaction is calm. Rarely, the sea lions have gotten into aggressive attacks with humans in the San Francisco area, although a few cases have been witnessed, thus, creating negative publicity with time (“Sea Lions and Humans” par. 4). For instance, in 2007, the sea lion attacked a 13 years old girl, attracting attention all over the media. Experts believe that the attack on the girl was not a result of a desire to prey on the girl or of an aggression, but instead, the girl caught a curiosity of the sea creature (“Sea Lions and Humans” par. 5).
Additionally, more accounts of the sea lions biting swimmers around California waters have reported, although experts claim those were because of male sea lions territorial aggression for the animals are known to be territorial (“Sea Lions and Humans” par. 6). In San Francisco, numerous tourists often come to visit the bay with sea lions; however, they have forewarned that the sea lions are not often cuddly and cute, as they seem. This is evident by a number of recent attacks by sea lions on people in San Francisco as reported by the Mammal Center. Recently, a sea lin chased a number of swimmers at the Aquatic Park in San Francisco. During mating seasons, the level of hormones in the body of a sea lion increase leading to the occurrence of various attacks on individuals getting closer to their habitats (“Sea Lions and Humans” par. 6). Usually, the male sea lions protect their staked zone to attract more females to their harem. However, when humans evade the sea lions’ natural habitat, they introduce the creatures to new behaviors. Thus, no much expectations of aggression since humans are moving beyond the encroaching their boundaries.
Additionally, it is not fair to classify every human as destructive to sea lions (“Sea Lions and Humans” par. 8). For instance, in a case of human errors such as oil spills, numerous people offer their time whenever emergency action is required. Without help from humans during these emergencies and other issues that arise in their natural environment, most sea lions would succumb to death (“Sea Lions and Humans” par. 8). Besides, people devote their time to study the habits and lives of sea lions. The search outcomes help in finding much information that will aid in the animals’ survival. Veterinary physicians work with sea lions to nurse them back to health and release them back into the wild (“Sea Lions and Humans” par. 9). In addition, they teach the public concerning the conservation efforts to eliminate a possibility of the sea lions becoming extinct.
Where Sea Lions Are Found
Sea Lions are widely distributed globally. Thus, people think that their population is high (“Sea Lion Q & A” par. 14). Most of the sea lions live in cold areas such as the sub-Arctic regions. Despite having habitats in every ocean in the world, sea lions are not found in the Atlantic Ocean (“Sea Lion Q & A.” par. 1). Besides, the species of the creature determine distinct distribution and habitat. The sea lions found in South America are otherwise known as the Southern sea lions and California sea lions, found from Rio de Janeiro to Peru, extending to western part of Mexico and Southern part of Isla Tres Marias (“Sea Lion Habitat” par. 2). Steller sea lions like the colder weather, thus, they are mainly found in the sub-Arctic region of the Pacific Ocean, going north. In addition, the Steller sea lions live on the ice of Okhotsk Sea and the Bering Sea waters. The Australian sea lions are mostly found along Australian beaches as the name suggests it (“Sea Lion Habitat” par. 2). This particular habit has also extended to the Bass Strait and Northern Coast of Tasmania. However, they are very scarce on Australian beaches as compared to other locations. In San Francisco, sea lions are commonly found at the Pier 39, which is a common tourist attraction in the state of California.
A New Zealand sea lion habit the New Zealand waters. Besides, other localities such as Dundas Island, Enderby Island, and the Auckland Islands, are typical for this particular species (“Sea Lion Habitat” par. 5). Throughout a winter, most males are found around the Catlin Island, the leading sea lions habitat globally, hence the greatest tourist attraction. Occasional overlaapping of areas has resulted in a crossing of the sea lions in the wild. Sometimes wandering sea lions can be found in habitats that they never lived in before because of nature disasters, like severe rainstorms, moving the creatures far away from their natural habitat (“Sea Lion Habitat” par. 5). Nonetheless, efforts are made to move the animals back to their natural habitat.
Sea lions are carnivorous and sleek creatures. Although, other times the sea lions are known to feed on aquatic plants and seaweed (“Sea Lion Q & A” par. 4). Sea lions are playful creatures and mostly spend hours playing in the water. During breeding seasons, the sea lions gather on coastal and rocky land (“Sea Lion Challenge & FAQs” par. 16). The female gives a birth to one sea lion puppy after a year. Female sea lion gives birth to their young ones on land. However, it is not strange for the sea lion to give birth in the water. Baby sea lions are nursed by their mothers until the young ones reach six months old (“Sea Lion Challenge & FAQs” par. 24). Then the young sea lions are taught how to swim and set out for hunting lessons from a mother sea lion. Sea lions often stay in large groups and hunt in pairs and groups that increase during a mating season (“Sea Lion Q & A” par. 9). Thus, the witnessed aggressiveness towards people in the water is an act of enforcing and displaying dominance in their territory.
Additionally, humans believed that sea lions migrate just like other mammals, but it is not the case (“Sea Lion Habitat” par. 7). Nevertheless, sea lions have been found in isolated habitats, because of human causes, for instance, because of a global warming being the leading challenge causing the ice layers to melt. In addition, the creatures found in warmer climates encounter swimmers and boats often in their natural habitat. Besides, sea lions on rocky areas face the challenge of removal of rocks laid for boat ramps and various items for easy accessibility (“Sea Lion Challenge & FAQs.” par. 29). Therefore, it is a responsibility for every researcher to keep an eye on everything concerning the sea lions and their habitats. Since, earlier, a problem affecting these creatures was identified, the previous solutions can be found, and preventive and precaution measures can be taken to avoid adverse actions.
Sea lions breed in all climates of both the north and south hemispheres; they are found in every ocean except the Atlantic Ocean. Sea lions come in various species such as Steller sea lion also known as the northern sea lion and the Australian sea lion found in west and south coasts of Australia. There is the South America sea lion also referred to as southern sea lion, found along South America's west coast, and the New Zealand sea lion found around New Zealand's sub-Antarctic South Island. The California sea lion is found along the shores of North Pacific and frequently visits the San Francisco Bay. The relationship between sea lions and humans is complex, meaning that it is beneficial to humans in the form of entertainment and, at the same time, it is hostile to humans due to the territorial aggression of the animals.
